Product Review : SoLux Mobile Floor Lamp

The SoLux Mobile Floor Lamp is a high-end task lamp manufactured by Tailored Lighting Inc. Like other products in the SoLux line, this model features patented full-spectrum technology that reproduces daylight more accurately than major brands, such as Ott, according to the manufacturer.

The technology powering this lighting and its resulting performance is of such quality that SoLux is used for professional purposes by many of the world's top museums, art galleries, and photographers. It is also used for its health benefits by those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder and Macular Degeneration.

While many manufacturers boast a product that delivers "full spectrum" lighting, this does not guarantee accurate replication of daylight. Candle light, for example, contains full spectrum light, but clearly is less powerful than daylight. Comparisons run by Tailored Lighting, Inc. show that other brands do not accurately match daylight's spectral power distribution as well as SoLux.

Given the intense and sometimes lengthy demands put on the eyes by quilting, this is extremely significant for those prone to eye strain and fatigue or with vision issues.

Features

The SoLux Mobile Floor lamp is designed for functionality and convenience. It includes a number of features quilters will find particularly useful.

- The swing design provides a wide range of motion, allowing light to easily be directed to the desired location
- Each model includes a built-in light diffuser
- A clamp is provided with this lamp enabling users the choice of using this as a floor lamp or mounting it to a work surface
- A 1-year warranty is provided
- Each unit is equipped with a SoLux 4700K, 50-watt bulb which :

    - provides a perfect color rendering index (CRI) in comparison to daylight
    - includes reduced infra-red light emissions
    - features reduced ultra-violet light emissions
    - provides a uniform beam of light

Pros :

The SoLux Floor Lamp is a wonderful choice to meet the heavy demands of intricate handiwork like quilting. The true daylight technology behind this lighting :

    - reduces eye strain
    - improves clarity and depth perception
    - displays colors more accurately
    - creates a comfortable work environment
From a practical standpoint, this lamp makes a great deal of sense for quilters. This model's bulb boasts a lifetime of 4,000 hours. In benchmarking, it was found to deliver color rendering indices far superior to leading task lights on the market. This means colors appear true rather than bleached out. In addition, although the bulb provides full spectrum lighting, harmful UV and IR light rays are filtered, so this lamp poses no health risk. Quilters can feel confident about the quality of work done under this lighting without worry of any harmful side effects.

Quilters will also find the lamps design beneficial and convenient. Both the head and light socket have been improved to provide better performance. Adjusting the lamp's position is easy and does not involve touching the head, which can grow hot. The "cool adjust" wire loop handle, instead, makes it possible to direct the light anywhere.

Cons :

There are a few minor drawbacks to consider with this lamp.

Should replacement bulbs be required at some time, these run roughly $8 each through the manufacturer. Since this is a high-end piece of equipment, other bulbs may not be substituted as a cost-cutting measure.

Returns are not particularly convenient. Should one be necessary, the manufacturer charges a 20% re-stocking fee. If the return is a result of some error on the manufacturer's part, however, this fee is waived. In order to return the lamp, an RMA number must be granted by the manufacturer and the item must be returned in its original packaging within thirty days of purchase.
