Mariner's Compass quilts are visually striking, but may feel too challenging for some. This can be the case even for seasoned quilters. This package from Quilt-Pro Systems and Judy Mathieson, instructor and author of two books on this design, makes Mariner's Compass blocks accessible even for the most hesitant. In addition to detailed, step-by-step guidance through the process, this software features a collection of blocks from Judy's books. In addition, bonus blocks ranging from 4-point to 64-point compasses are included. Any skill level is bound to find the perfect project here. Although this is a Quilt-Pro product, it is unnecessary to have Quilt-Pro in order to use this software. The package is fully functional as a stand-alone program. If Quilt-Pro is installed, however, the programs are complimentary. Users may automatically install blocks from Block Foundation into Quilt-Pro in order to make any changes. In terms of function and user interface, Block Factory is similar to other Quilt-Pro products, the Foundation Factory packages. The greatest similarity between the two is that foundations may be sized and printed. Block Factory : Mariner's Compass, however, includes more features. This software includes Judy's tips for accurate block construction using templates and foundations. In addition, unlike her book, it includes her freezer paper method. Step by step explanations and photos are included, simplifying the process of achieving beautiful results. Quilters who achieved dubious results previously will benefit from this. Using the software is fairly straightforward, and the user interface is convenient. Upon selecting a block design, users choose to work with either templates or foundations. For those selecting templates, the Template Wizard automates the process. Once your project's dimensions are specified, the software displays pieces ready for printing. It is possible to add or subtract pieces for printing, cutting down on wasted paper. The Foundation option, on the other hand, displays the quilt in color in an outline format. Sections are exploded in this format, allowing quilters to see how many sections are required to make the compass. This package even simplifies the process of construction. The foundation view includes numbered pieces indicating the order of assembly. This order applies for both foundation and template piecing. System Requirements
- Windows 95/98/NT4/2000/ME/XP Features
- Over 130 different Mariner's Compass blocks chosen by Judy Mathieson Pros : Flexibility in construction is possible. Those who prefer not to paper piece will appreciate the choice of printing of templates instead. No matter the method of construction, assembly order is very clear, and results easy to achieve. Design flexibility is also possible with this package. The interface between Quilt-Pro and Block Factory : Mariner's Compass is seamless. Quilters may enjoy a greater amount of freedom when using the two packages together, without a huge difference in the feel of the software. The software includes a bonus screensaver feature. Users can enjoy alternating images of Judy's quilts on their desktop when their computer is idle. This does not improve one's quilting skills, but it is a very nice touch to get one's creativity sparked. Cons : There is currently no version of Block Factory made for the Macintosh platform. PC emulating software must be purchased separately in order for the program to run. Related : More Software Reviews
