Product Review : Janome 6019QC Sewing Machine

The "QC" in this model's name stands for "Quilter's Choice". Understandably, this sewing machine has been designed to meet the specific needs of quilters. The 6019 is the mechanical entry-level model of a product line that boasts the most in-demand features coupled with a competitive price.

It is a solid choice for quilters needing reliable performance and quilt-friendly features who are not looking to move to a digital machine yet.

Pros :

Although this is a lower-end model, the 6019 QC was clearly built for performance and functionality. Both the design and features are well suited for the demands of machine quilting.

The 6019QC is ergonomically designed, which is a huge benefit for larger projects. Its work table slopes downward making it easier and more comfortable to reach. Likewise, the front panel display is set at an angle conducive to comfortable viewing and access.

A particularly beneficial feature of this Janome machine is the Superior Feed System. This system is also found on the high-end 10000 model, so its inclusion in the 1690QC is a convenient surprise for quilters. The SFS consists of a 7-point feed dog mechanism that allows stitching to begin right at the fabric edge. It makes it unnecessary to hold the starting thread or use scrap fabric to begin sewing. It also provides consistently even stitching.

The 6019 QC's design includes a foot lifter that provides a generous five-eighths of an inch clearance. This is very handy when working with multiple layers of fabric and batting.

While specialty accessories must often be purchased separately, the 6019 QC is equipped with a fairly inclusive Quilting Kit.

This kit includes :

open-toe even-feed foot with quilt guide
    open-toe darning foot
    cloth guide
    quarter-inch seam foot
    open-toe craft foot

This machine uses sliding selectors rather than a digital mechanism control stitch length and width. This feature makes switching between stitches fairly convenient, although stitch control is more precise with via a digital mechanism.

The needle threading feature is extremely easy to use. Of the entire Janome product line, only the high-end 10000 is easier to thread because the process is fully automated. Those with unsteady hands will greatly appreciate the convenience of the threader.

While many machines include a flip-open accessory drawer, the 6019 QC's slide-open drawer is placed on the needle-side of the machine. This design modification makes accessing the drawer simple while a project is in place under the needle.

The 6019QC differs slightly from other machines when making a quilt stitch. It can handle the use of quilting thread in the upper position, while most machines require a monofilament thread for this purpose. In a further testament to the machine's power, only a normal tension setting is required to achieve beautiful results with this stitch.

Cons :

Although the 6019 QC is a solidly-designed machine that performs well, there are a few minor drawbacks.

Although the 6019 QC includes a fairly complete kit of quilting accessories, it does not include the Ditch Quilting Foot. This must be purchased separately.

In trial runs, minor looping occasionally occurred on the bottom thread. This was rectified, however, with a gentle tug to the thread.

Setting stitches can be somewhat tricky. Stitch selection is regulated by a dial control. The 6019 QC requires that both the needle and presser foot remain in the upright position in order to set a stitch properly, otherwise it reverts to the previous setting. While this does not interfere with the machine's function, sewers must remember to position these mechanisms before changing stitches.

With the exception of the walking and darning feet, the 6019 QC's presser feet snap on. Since the walking and darning feet have moving parts, they were designed to screw on. The screws used for these feet, however are the same size as the screws that join the ankle of the snap-on feet to the machine. The screw head can be difficult to grasp as its head is smaller than the standard size. Those with finger mobility or hand strength issues may find it difficult to manipulate or adequately tighten the screws prior to use.

There is no automatic needle-down mechanism with this sewing machine. This can be a nuisance when turning corners, but a series of light taps to the foot pedal can properly position the needle.
