How big is it? Make this block any size you would like. Be sure to assign a size to each patch of the block. Imagine a 2x2 grid over the block. If you assign 2" (finished) to each patch, the block would be 4x4 " finished. If you assign 3" (finished) to each patch, the block would be 6x6 " finished. Your border should be in scale with your finished quilt. If your quilt center is rather delicate, you wouldn't want an overwhelmingly large block in the border. Unless you are planning your quilt in advance on the computer or on graph paper, you might want to consider waiting and "audition" borders when your quilt center is done. How do I go about making it? Quilters use a 1/4" seam allowance. Therefore you will need to add 1/2" to the finished measurement when cutting. Let's say our border blocks will be 2" finished. We'll start by cutting two 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares each of yellow and blue for every block we need for our border. To make the "knot" for the Bow Tie, cut two 1-1/2" squares of yellow. Lay a yellow 1-1/2" square on one corner of a blue 2-1/2" square, right sides together, matching the raw edges: ![]() Stitch diagonally across the yellow square, then carefully flip it back and press. You may choose to trim out the extra yellow fabric from under the corner unit, or trim off both the extra yellow fabric and the blue fabric, or don't trim at all. If you are machine quilting, the extra fabric thickness isn't going to trouble you. Stitch the units to make your Bow Tie block as shown below:
![]() Great. Now that it's finished, how do I use it? These blocks can be pieced together to form a border for your quilt. You may have to adjust the quilt center by adding extra fabric to the edges for a perfect fit.
What to do if the corners don't fit just right? Change the corners by adding yellow/blue strip set plus a four patch corner on to the ends:
