Product Review : Bernina Artista 200E Sewing Machine

Bernina's Artista 200E is the perfect marriage of computer and sewing machine. It is the first and only sewing system powered by Microsoft Windows. With its color touch screen, the 200E is a high-tech, intuitive machine that allows ample sewing flexibility and creativity.

The stitching capabilities of the 200E are rather impressive. With a collection of 853 stitches, including 31quilting stitches, 6 alphabets and 40mm motifs, there is a great deal of choices available. There is also a selection of 4-directional stitches, ideal for decorative embellishments without turning the fabric, and 16-directional stitches for more embellishments and some quilting stitches. These stitches are programmable and may be used in combination with other stitches to create unique decorative designs.

The stitch functionality of the 200E is fairly high tech. It provides quilters with a considerable amount of flexibility. The machine maintains an altered stitch memory, handy for re-using customized stitches. It also provides a stitch history, which proves useful in repeating stitches for lengthy seams. Quilters, in particular, will find this useful.

Pros :

The 200E is a fantastic choice for quilters who include embroidery extensively in their projects. In addition to built-in capabilities, additional embroidery designs may be downloaded if the machine is connected to a PC with Internet access. The manufacturer has included the "My Artista" portal option for those without a computer. In this case, the 200E is outfitted with an optional modem, which allows it to connect to the Bernina server to access these designs. Finally, a CD of designs is included with the machine. Simply loading it into the 200E's drive provides access to additional embroidery designs. With this option includes the possibility of purchasing more designs as new CD collections are made available.

The machine's warranty is fairly comprehensive. The terms include 2 years electrical coverage, 5 years circuit board coverage and 20 years coverage for mechanical issues.

The 200E provides an exceptional level of learning support. In addition to a user's manual, an on-screen and video tutorial is included. There is a wealth of material for sewers to quickly become familiar with the machine's operation and functionality. The support material is organized in such a way that it may also be used as a quick reference.

Cons :

While a vast amount of creativity in stitching is possible on this machine, quilters who do use embroidery or embellishments in their projects will not need this functionality. They may prefer a machine that more directly targets a quilter's needs.
